Mike and Angela Grimbly

According to the membership records, Angela Grimbly’s membership predates that of Mike’s, having joined in 1976, some 11 years earlier.

After playing at various other squash clubs including, West Malling, Queens and then Harvey’s , Mike became a member of the Maidstone Squash Club in 1987. He attributed his decision to join MSC to the club’s reputation for hosting a higher calibre of player, therefore providing a more competitive environment. Mike was later invited to join the Men’s 3rd team which was held in very high regard at the time. Angela also played in the women’s 3rd team, and according to Mike, “ she had a wicked back hand, that of a real pro” and still does when he misbehaves !

Subsequently, Angela and Mike became actively involved in the running of Maidstone Squash Club each serving as chairperson for a period of three years. Angela’s appointment as the club’s first ever female chairperson marked an historic milestone. Prior to assuming this esteemed role, Angela contributed significantly as the fixture secretary and treasurer for several years. Later Mike was invited to become one of the three Trustees of the club, a position that he still holds today.

To add to their repertoire, Mikes was successful in bringing back the Maidstone Open a prestigious squash tournament, secured sponsorship from Telewest, elevating its status, and attracting top level players, the introduction of Junior Squash and Angela, playing a crucial role in transforming the club's atmosphere by championing a non-smoking policy, recognising the importance of a healthy and clean environment for both players and spectators, before the smoking ban came into force

In recognition of their unwavering dedication, support, and remarkable commitment to the club, spanning a collective membership tenure of 80 years, Maidstone Squash Club extends an honorary membership to both Angela and Mike Grimbly.

Congratulations both !!
